More than 100 people have been detained at vigils in memory of Alexei Navalny in various Russian cities, according to a report by rights and legal aid group OVD-Info.
The group confirmed police detaining people in eight cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Tver, Taganrog, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don and Murmansk. An updated list of those detained is available here.
Over half of the people — 56 as of 02:45 Moscow time — in OVD-Info’s list were detained St. Petersburg.
A video published by SOTAvision showed a group of people dismantling a memorial to Navalny on the Solovetsky Stone in central Moscow — one of Russia’s main monuments to victims of political repression. A group of police officers simply watched on, saying that they were “waiting until they are done.”
After Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) announced Navalny's death on February 16, people around the world came out to Russian embassies, monuments to victims of political repression, and central squares in dozens of countries to express their grief.
